Container Services

Wilmington is a modern and full-service container port offering a full range of container terminal facilities and capabilities.  The Port has two state-of-the-art 50-ton capacity container cranes with cycling capability of 35 or more containers per hour, plus container yard handling equipment such as "top

picks" and transtainers.  Over 50 acres of container storage land are available to serve the Port's two container carriers, Dole Fresh Fruit Company and Great White White Fleet, Ltd., equipped with reefer plugs, TIR Gate facilities and warehouses for stuffing, stripping and "swing loading" of containerized freight.

Weekly container service between Wilmington and Central American ports is offered by Dole Ocean Cargo Express and Great White Fleet Ltd., calling in Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Northbound service for refrigerated cargoes is also offered by Dole and Chiquita, utilizing their modern full container vessels.

In 2004, the Port of Wilmington handled close to 1.5 million tons of containerized cargo, including imports (mostly bananas and tropical fruit) and exports. Total container throughput reached 162,000 TEU's, making Wilmington the largest container port on the Delaware River.
